Jemma Ennis
Along with influences from NZ artists Jeena Shin and Sara Hughes, the primary source of inspiration for Jemma's work still comes from Wassily Kandinsky’s book, Point and Line to Plane. His commentaries on line, shape, colour and composition still influence her work today. Jemma's day job as a Graphic Designer also influences her style with the linear stillness, subdued colour palette and simplicity of the forms.
An interest in urban landscapes and architectural structures provides Jemma with limitless subject matter. The straight lines, shadows and strong, dominant forms interplay with a subtle colour palette. Tending towards landscape forms more recently, she views and constructs the landscape-like shapes in a similar way to an urban city space.
The process of making work is just as important to her as the work itself. Jemma is constantly contemplating her next move, and how she gets there with her materials and processes.
Jemma has been practising since 2009 and exhibiting in group shows since 2011. In 2016 her work ‘Looming Norman’ was purchased by the Wallace Arts Trust.
